Double seamers have always been one of the longest-lasting items of canning line equipment.
But while there are cost benefits associated with this, ironically the longevity of seamers makes he job of buying a new machine more challenging for the canner, who must try to anticipate the changing needs of the industry . . .
Tooling Developments
Buildings longer life into seamer tooling has been a crucial area of development in recent years, especially as cans are increasingly being light-weighted . . .
By installing the Double Groove seaming roll assembly and P-Pin from Tool Makers International (TMI), California vegetable canner, the Sun Garden - Gangi Canning Company, has doubled the wear-life of tooling for its Angelus
P-seamers.
The Double Groove assembly is essentially two rolls in one, says TMI, with two mirror image profiles ground into the single part, but costing less than twice that of a normal single seaming roll.
"With those kinds of savings, both in monetary cost and material use, there's no reason not to use the Double Groove roll," says Sun Garden director of purchasing Anthony Gangi. "When you factor-in the labor savings during set-up time, the bottom line looks even better."
Installation time for the Double Groove seaming roll is cut to a minimum by use of a P-Pin, a pre-set pin which requires no shimming, simply relying on a locking set-screw.
